The Continental Cafe, Tunsgate Square, Guildford GU1 3QZ

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

This independently run busy cafe is situated off the High Street in a pedestrian-only covered square. Whilst there are some tables inside, most are out in the light, airy  square and it is a welcome retreat away from the busy High Street.

The cafe sells a wide range of light meals and snacks including cooked breakfasts, soup, paninis, hot wraps and jacket potatoes. I had a chocolate croissant and could choose between scones, slices of cake, pastries or cookies. Their range of cold drinks is impressive but my cappuccino was very disappointing – granted it was hot but fairly flavourless and the froth was an almost non-existant layer of murky bubbles! That said, this cafe is very popular, the service was friendly and its great to sit in the square surrounded by some lovely shops. Order at the counter where you can help yourself to snacks and order light meals which will be brought to your table.

I visited when the Christmas lights were strung round the square and the decorations were up making it a very attractive place to sit. One thing to note is that as the square is enclosed, the noise does echo quite a bit and the addition of a few noisy children can make quite a difference!
